Pakistan rice exporters earned $1.9 billions from July 2013 to 30 June 2014 from the export of basmati and non-basmati rice with an increase of 16% in the export of basmati rice. Electricity shortages have also increased the cost of production because some rice mills are operating at only half their capacity, and gas shortages make the drying process longer. Transporters have been targeted by criminal gangs who demand protection money for every container and sometimes hijack transport vehicles. Stating that basmati is a name for a slender, aromatic and long grain variety of rice grown in the specific geographical area at the foothills of the Himalayas in Pakistan, the BGA has argued in the appeal, filed through Shafiullah Khan, a Pakistan national based in New Delhi, only the rice grown in certain areas of Punjab in Pakistan, where the rice kernels are grown on conventional rice lands and they interact with the environment, atmosphere, soil and climate to yield exquisite rice can be called ‘basmati' in the true sense. Pakistan's is primarily an agro-based economy, with the agriculture sector contributing around 25% towards GDP. Rice is the third-largest crop in terms of area in Pakistan after wheat and cotton, and in 2003-4 was grown on 2.46 million hectares.( 1 ) It is one of the key non-traditional export commodities of pakistan.

During 2008-09, rice was planted approximately on 2.96 million hectares with highest ever 6.95 million tons production. This was achieved due to combined efforts of rice research and development, favourable environmental conditions, high prices of paddy and good economic return to farmers.
